What: Dr. Macias-Gonzalez will discuss the social networks and spaces of Chicago’s gay male subculture where exiled or immigrant same-sex-attracted Mexicans created a new identity for themselves as homosexuals from the turn of the century to the Second World War. Building on his ongoing research and publications on masculinity and class in early twentieth-century Mexico, Victor studied the figure of famed operatic tenor Jose’ Mojica (1895-1974), who while with the Chicago Opera form 1919 until the 1930s, developed extensive ties among the Chicago’s gay community.
