Distinguished Economics Lecture: Foreign Aid and Poverty

 

 

What: The UW-L Economics Distinguished Lecture Series asks, "Can foreign aid end world poverty?" The public lecture will feature New York University economics Professor William Easterly. Easterly, who spent 16 years as a research economist at the World Bank, is the author of "The White Man's Burden: How the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good" and other books. He has worked in most areas of the developing world, most heavily in Africa, Latin America and Russia. He is an associate editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Economic Growth, and of the Journal of Development Economics. His lecture is free and open to the public.

UW-L Hispanic Heritage Month Special Event

Thursday, November 9th at 6pm in The WARD room, Cartwright Center, UW-L. Guatemalan speaker Edwin Canil from the Association for Justice and Reconciliation will talk about recent legal efforts to hold the former Guatemalan Military High Commands responsible for GENOCIDE and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. (UW-L Hispanic Heritage Month is made possible by LASO Latin American/Latino Student Organization and the UW-L Institue for Latino/a and Latin American Studies, as well as support from other on and off campus organizations.)

There will be two full days of film showing, with topics spanning the globe, ethnicities, and economic classes. UNAFF presents images which will stay with us forever.

 

The films will be shown from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, November 12th and 13th. There is no charge for attending.

LUNCHBOX/SOAP BOX: "Transnational Scholar Circuits and the Emergence of Gay Subjectivity in Mexico, 1890-1974. The case of don Jose’ Mojica” by Victor Macias-Gonzalez, History Department.

 

What: Dr. Macias-Gonzalez will discuss the social networks and spaces of Chicago’s gay male subculture where exiled or immigrant same-sex-attracted Mexicans created a new identity for themselves as homosexuals from the turn of the century to the Second World War. Building on his ongoing research and publications on masculinity and class in early twentieth-century Mexico, Victor studied the figure of famed operatic tenor Jose’ Mojica (1895-1974), who while with the Chicago Opera form 1919 until the 1930s, developed extensive ties among the Chicago’s gay community.
