ADVISING DAY – SPANISH & STUDY ABROAD

9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. GENERAL ADVISING BY SPANISH FACULTY in Port O’

Call, Cartwright Center.

9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION & THE

STUDY ABROAD OFFICE. Staff will be available for study abroad advising and general information about the wide array of study abroad programs and the application process. Port O’ Call, CC.

10:00 am – 12:00 p.m. and 1:15-2:00 p.m. TIM WALLS, COLLEGE OF LIBERAL

STUDIES-DEAN’S OFFICE will be available from 10-12 and 1:15-2:00 p.m.

to evaluate transcripts and SNAP forms, to advise students about to graduate, to

advise on declaring a major/minor in the College and to assist with other college-

BREAKOUT SESSIONS will be presented according to the following schedule:

 

8:50 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. GMH 205 THE GATE PROGRAM IN MEXICO.

Violeta Abitia, Assistant Director for Global Awareness Through Experience

(GATE) and Melissa Wallace, Senior Lecturer, Department of Modern

Languages, UW-La Crosse, will provide information about this cultural

immersion experience in Mexico City and Chiapas that explores women’s

reality, the struggle for Indigenous rights, and other issues of social justice. Find

out about the efforts of grassroots organizers who are fighting for human rights,

sustainable economies/agriculture, and alternative models to neo-liberalism and

corporate globalization.

 

8:50 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. GMH 208 UN VIAJE POR ESPAÑA

María del Carmen Herrera, Amity Intern, Department of Modern Languages at UW-La Crosse and Amparo Alpañes, Visiting Instructional Academic Staff, Department of Modern Languages, UW-La Crosse will provide a cultural overview of Spain and will include information about specific cities and regions, customs, foods, music, and dances. They will also talk about the various study abroad program opportunities in Spain (Valladolid, Sevilla, CEA-Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, and ISEP opportunities).

 

9:55 a.m.-10:50 a.m. GMH 205 UN VIAJE POR MÉXICO

Luis Rodríguez, Amity Intern, Department of Modern Languages, UW-La Crosse,

will provide information about Mexico and specifically about the UW-L study abroad program in Xalapa, Mexico. Luis is from Xalapa and has worked as a tutor/mentor for the Xalapa study program. This is a great opportunity if you are considering a study program in México.

 

9:55 a.m.-10:50 a.m. GMH 208 STUDY AND TRAVEL ABROAD IN PERÚ

Gabriela Dongo, Visiting Instructional Academic Staff, Department of Modern

Languages, UW-La Crosse, from Lima, Perú will present information on our

newest study abroad program in Lima. Gabriela will also provide general

information about Perú and travel opportunities.

 

11:00 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. GMH 205 CAREERS/DOMESTIC INTERNSHIPS

Karolyn Bald, Career Services, will provide information about internships and

jobs related to the world of languages. Special emphasis will be put on how to

better emphasize your language skills and your international experiences.

 

11:00 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. GMH 208 INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIPS

Sandy Sieber, Study Abroad Office Coordinator, will provide information on

international internship opportunities in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking

countries.

 

11:00 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. GMH 203 STUDY IN XALAPA, MÉXICO

Katie Treu, UW-L Spanish/Education Major, will share her Xalapa, México study

abroad program experiences. This session will provide information about the

program site, the courses that are available to UW-L students, the home-stay, the

tutorials, the excursions to surrounding areas, and general information about living

and traveling in México.

 

12:05 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. GMH 205 TEACHER EDUCATION

Prof. Jean Hindson will provide an information session for students who are

interested in teaching any modern language. Dr. Hindson will be joined by

Dr. Joyce Shanks (School of Education) to describe the Professional Development

School opportunities at Northwoods International Elementary School. Modern

Language majors and minors planning to register for Field Experience II in spring

2009 should attend the first part of this meeting. Any modern language education

students planning to be certified to teach and who have not yet attended a modern

language education information session are urged to attend. See Dr. Hindson for

important information if unable to attend.

 

12:05 p.m.-1:00 p.m. GMH 208 NEXOS VOLUNTARIOS EN PERÚ

Prof. Omar Rivera, Department of Philosophy, UW-La Crosse, will present

information about an organization in Perú that offers volunteer/service learning

opportunities through a program called “Nexos Voluntarios” (Volunteer Links).

Find out more about this exciting and valuable learning opportunity.

 

1:10 p.m. – 2:05 p.m. GMH 205 HUMAN RIGHTS IN GUATEMALA

Connie Vanderhyden, Multicultural Student Services, will talk about the Guatemala Accompaniment Project (GAP) and about ways to become involved in Human Rights Advocacy in Latin America. The Guatemala Accompaniment Project was formed to respond to the request of the Guatemalan people who have suffered threats, harassment and violence for many years. Accompaniers are trained U.S. volunteers who live side-by-side with at-risk communities and organizations, providing a measure of security and creating space for the Guatemalans to organize and defend their rights.

 

1:10 p.m. – 2:05 p.m. GMH 207 UN VIAJE POR COLOMBIA

Carlos Carrillo, Amity Intern, Department of Modern Languages, UW-La Crosse, will provide a cultural overview of Colombia, South America, and will include information about specific cities and regions, customs, foods, music, and dances. Carlos will also talk about some of the important current events in his country and the relationship between Colombia and the United States.

• General advising with language faculty for students in Spanish classes

• Find out about course offerings for the Spring 2009 semester

• Advising with language faculty for Spanish Majors, Spanish Majors with a Business Concentration and Spanish Minors

• Study abroad advising; complete the Study Abroad Academic Plan with program-specific language faculty

• Advising and information on study abroad from the staff of the Office of International Education/Study Abroad

• College of Liberal Studies advising: graduation requirements, declaring a Spanish major/minor

• Peer advising with students who have returned from study abroad and who will be available to chat with you individually about their experiences

• Information about student scholarships (specific to Spanish majors)

• Information about the Spanish Club and the Spanish National Honor Society

• Information about a new summer study program opportunity for prospective health care professionals being offered in Costa Rica through UW-Eau Claire (great for Spanish majors and Spanish minors who are completing a major or minor in the health sciences areas)
